Thomas F. Lüscher, MD, FRCP, FESC, is a world-renowned cardiologist and academic leader, currently serving as President of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) for the 2024–2026 term. He holds the position of Professor of Cardiology at King’s College London and is the Director of Research, Education & Development at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals (London, UK). Additionally, he remains a Professor of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Physiology at the University of Zurich, where he previously served as Chairman of Cardiology for over two decades.
Professor Lüscher’s research is highly multidisciplinary, bridging the gap between basic vascular biology and clinical practice. His work has pioneered the understanding of endothelial function, nitric oxide, and the role of aging genes in cardiovascular disease. He has coordinated numerous high-impact clinical trials and large-scale registries, focusing on acute coronary syndromes, heart failure, and innovative catheter-based interventions.
A prolific author and editor, Professor Lüscher served as the Editor-in-Chief of the European Heart Journal (2009–2020), significantly increasing its global impact. He is the editor of several foundational textbooks, including the ESC Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine. His scientific excellence is reflected in his h-index of 156 (Scopus 2024), ranking him among the most cited scientists in cardiovascular research globally.
Throughout his career, he has received numerous prestigious accolades, including the ESC Gold Medal, the Andreas Grüntzig Lecture award, and the Mayo Distinguished Alumni Award. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and an honorary member of several international societies of cardiology.
