Thomas F. Luscher

Professor Lüscher (www.tomluescher.ch) studied medici-ne at the University of Zurich and obtained board certifi-cation in internal medicine and cardiology in Switzerland and is GMC certifified in the U.K.. He trained at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, USA in cardiovascular physiology and cardiology and was Pro-fessor of Pharmacotherapy and Director of Clinical Phar-macology at the University Hospitals Basel, then Profes-sor and Vice-Chairman of Cardiology at the University Hospital Bern and later Professor and Chairman of Cardio-logy and Director of the University Heart Center at the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland. Since 2017, he is Director of Research, Edu-cation & Development and consultant cardiologist at the Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals and professor of cardiology at the Imperial College and Kings College in London, U.K.. In the newly formed huge trust with St. Thomas’, Guys and King’s Hospital, he has been appointed Co-Director of the Cardiovascular Academic Group. He also holds a parttime commitment as Chairman of the Center for Molecular Cardiology at the University of Zurich (see www.cmc.uzh.ch). Professor Lüscher has been mentoring numerous physicians and scientists from more than 20 countries with many holding chairs or directorships at universities and major hospitals in Switzerland, Europe, Asia and North America. His research is translational from bench to bedside and focuses on endothelium-derived mediators and their alteration with aging, hypertension, lipids and inflammation as well as on atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, acute coronary syndromes and heart failure. He is among the 0.1% most cited scientists with a h-index of 151 (Research Gate). He is an editor of the ESC Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine (Oxford University Press 2019) and the Module Innere Medizin (Springer Verlag, Heidelberg, FRG; 2014- 2024) and of the Manual of Cardiovascular Medicine (Oxford University Press 2022). He lectures worldwide and is chairman of the board of charities in Switzerland and the UK (Zurich Heart House and London Heart House) and instrumental for their educa-tional programmes (Postgraduate Course on Heart Failure London, London Shock, Cardiology Update London, MasterClasses in Heart Failure worldwide, Webinars). He was editor-in-chief of the European Heart Journal 2009-2020 (increase in IF from 8.9 to 29.9) and continues as senior editor. He is now president elect of the European Society of Cardiology.

Curriculum Vitae

Thomas F. Lüscher, MD, FRCP, FESC, is a world-renowned cardiologist and academic leader, currently serving as President of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) for the 2024–2026 term. He holds the position of Professor of Cardiology at King’s College London and is the Director of Research, Education & Development at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals (London, UK). Additionally, he remains a Professor of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Physiology at the University of Zurich, where he previously served as Chairman of Cardiology for over two decades.

Professor Lüscher’s research is highly multidisciplinary, bridging the gap between basic vascular biology and clinical practice. His work has pioneered the understanding of endothelial function, nitric oxide, and the role of aging genes in cardiovascular disease. He has coordinated numerous high-impact clinical trials and large-scale registries, focusing on acute coronary syndromes, heart failure, and innovative catheter-based interventions.

A prolific author and editor, Professor Lüscher served as the Editor-in-Chief of the European Heart Journal (2009–2020), significantly increasing its global impact. He is the editor of several foundational textbooks, including the ESC Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine. His scientific excellence is reflected in his h-index of 156 (Scopus 2024), ranking him among the most cited scientists in cardiovascular research globally.

Throughout his career, he has received numerous prestigious accolades, including the ESC Gold Medal, the Andreas Grüntzig Lecture award, and the Mayo Distinguished Alumni Award. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and an honorary member of several international societies of cardiology.
