Lars Rydén is a leading Swedish cardiologist who graduated from Uppsala University and the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, completing his board qualification in 1965 and earning his PhD from the University of Gothenburg in 1974. He holds board certifications in both internal medicine and cardiology. Throughout his substantive academic and clinical career, he served as a full Professor of Cardiology at the Karolinska Institutet and Head of the Department of Cardiology at the Karolinska University Hospital from 1989 to 2005. He currently continues his professional contributions as a Senior Professor and Professor Emeritus of Cardiology at the Karolinska Institutet.
Professor Rydén has exerted deep institutional influence across Swedish and European medical frameworks, notably serving as President of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and President of the Swedish Society of Cardiology. He has chaired high-level expert bodies, including the European Commission's Expert Committee Heart Health Plan Europe, the Scientific Board of the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation, and directed guideline implementations for the Swedish Board of Health and Welfare. He has published approximately 750 scientific papers focused primarily on arrhythmias, cardiac pacing, congestive heart failure, and the macrovascular complications of diabetes. His career milestones have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the ESC Gold Medal, the Karolinska Institutets Large Silver Medal, and a Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Silesia.
