John Pernow

John Pernow, MD, PhD, FESC, is Professor and Head of the Cardiology Unit, Department of Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. He is also senior consultant of cardiology at Karolinska University Hospital. He is chairman of the scientific council of the Swedish Heart and Lung Foundation and member of the working group on Translational Cardiology of the Swedish Society of Cardiology and the. His clinical expertise is coronary artery disease. John Pernow’s research is focused on mechanisms behind and novel treatments targeting atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and ischemic heart disease. This research involves mechanistic studies and clinical investigations on patients with coronary artery disease and risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease with special focus on diabetes.

John Pernow is a Professor and the Head of the Cardiology Unit within the Department of Medicine at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. Alongside his academic leadership, he serves as a Senior Consultant of Cardiology at the Karolinska University Hospital.

Professor Pernow’s clinical and scientific expertise centers on coronary artery disease. His research investigations focus heavily on exploring the underlying biological mechanisms of, and discovering novel treatments targeting, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and ischemic heart disease. His research team conducts mechanistic studies and clinical trials involving patients with coronary artery disease and associated risk factors, with a specific focus on diabetes comorbid presentations. Reflecting his influence in the national research strategy, he serves as the Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Swedish Heart and Lung Foundation and contributes to the working group on Translational Cardiology of the Swedish Society of Cardiology.
