Stefan James

Stefan James is Professor of Cardiology and Scientific Director of Uppsala Clinical Research Center at Uppsala University. He is a Senior Interventional Cardiologist at Uppsala University Hospital Sweden. His research has been published in over 450 peer-reviewed cardiology journals, and he is an associate editor of Circulation and an editorial board member for the European Heart Journal, and American Heart Journal. Stefan James has served as PI on steering committees for numerous international trials in cardiology and has pioneered the concept of registry based randomized clinical trials. He has served as the chairman of the Swedish Coronary and Angioplasty registry of SWEDEHEART and the president of the Swedish Cardiac society. Stefan James has received numerous reseach prizes and awards. For several years, he has been named by Thomson Reuters as a ‘Highly Cited Researcher’, ranking him among the top 1% most cited in clinical medicine.

Curriculum Vitae

Stefan James is a Professor of Cardiology at Uppsala University and serves as a Senior Interventional Cardiologist within the Department of Cardiology at the Uppsala University Hospital in Sweden. He completed his medical studies at Uppsala University in 1991, followed by a PhD in Cardiology in 2003 and his Habilitation as an Associate Professor in 2006. He also serves as the Scientific Director of the Uppsala Clinical Research Center (UCR) and previously spent time as a Visiting Associate Professor at the Duke Clinical Research Institute in the United States.

Professor James is a leading international authority in acute coronary care, interventional registry networks, and large-scale clinical trials. He has driven more than 30 multicenter randomized clinical trials, notably spearheading landmark trials such as TASTE, VALIDATE, and FULL REVASC, and currently serves on the steering committees for major programs including Euroheart and SWEDEHEART. His immense publication record spans 652 papers, and his Google Scholar metrics reveal over 177,000 citations with an H-index of 129, earning him a recurring listing among the "World's most influential scientific minds" by Clarivate. His organizational leadership includes past presidencies of the Swedish Society of Cardiology, Co-Chair of the ESC Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee, and Chair of the ESC Data Science Committee. In 2025, he was elected a lifetime member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and received the EuroPCR Andreas Gruntzig Ethica Award.
