Dr. Bahira Shahim is a cardiologist born in January 1986 who graduated with her Medical Degree from the Karolinska Institutet in 2013. She completed her internship and specialized clinical training at the Karolinska University Hospital, securing her medical license and board certification as a Specialist in Cardiology from the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare. In 2019, she defended her PhD thesis dedicated to clinical screening strategies for dysglycaemia in relation to long-term cardiovascular risk at the Karolinska Institutet. She subsequently advanced her research path via a multi-year postdoctoral fellowship in interventional cardiology at the Cardiovascular Research Foundation in New York, USA, under the supervision of Dr. Gregg W. Stone.

Dr. Shahim currently serves as a practicing Cardiologist at Karolinska University Hospital, an Assistant Professor, and the Team Leader for Valvular Heart Disease within the Department of Medicine at the Karolinska Institutet. Recognized as an outstanding early-career investigator, she was appointed a "Future Research Leader" by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research in 2025 and won the prestigious Sven and Ebba-Christina Hagberg Prize in 2024. She acts as the principal investigator for multiple grants funded by the Swedish Research Council and the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation, manages an active team of PhD candidates and postdocs, and serves as an Associate Editor for European Heart Journal - Valvular and Structural Heart Disease.
