Michael Spannagl is professor of internal medicine at the University of Munich Hospital (LMU KLINIKUM). His specialization is internal medicine, vascular medicine, haemostasis and intensive care. He was head of the Haemostasis and Immunogenetics division at the University of Munich Hospital and responsible for experimental, laboratory and clinical studies on anticoagulation, haemophilia therapy, patient blood management and transplantation medicine. He is member of DIN/CEN/ISO committees on the standardisation of medical laboratory diagnostics and quality management. At the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) he is convenor of the laboratory and diagnostics division. He was vice-chairman of the German Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research (GTH), and is the chairman of the German Society for Promoting Quality Assurance in Medical Laboratories (INSTAND). He has authored and co-authored more than 300 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. As a board member of the editorial committee, he has co-authored the german guidelines on laboratory medicine (RILIBAEK) and haemotherapy, as well as the guidelines on prophylaxis and treatment of venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. He is also an active member of several national and international scientific societies with a main focus on haemostasis, laboratory medicine, intensive care and transplantation medicine.
