Demetrios V. Vlahakos is an accomplished specialist in internal medicine and nephrology. He earned his medical degree from the Athens University School of Medicine in 1978 and completed his PhD at Patras University School of Medicine in 1988, receiving Summa Cum Laude honors for both. His extensive postgraduate training in the United States includes a fellowship in Hypertension at Boston University School of Medicine, an internal medicine residency at Salem Hospital, a clinical fellowship in Nephrology at the New England Medical Center Hospitals (Tufts University), and a fellowship in Transplantation and Immunogenetics at Brigham and Women's Hospital (Harvard University). He holds broad certifications from the American Board of Internal Medicine in both internal medicine and nephrology.

In Greece, Dr. Vlahakos developed an extensive clinical and academic legacy. He was the founder and Director of the Renal Unit at Attikon University Hospital, directing it from 2003 until 2021 while progressing from Assistant Professor to full Professor of Nephrology at Athens Medical School. He also spent over three decades as the Chief Consultant in Medicine and Nephrology at the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center. Now holding the title of Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Nephrology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, he continues to practice as a Visiting Professor at the European University Cyprus and serves as the Chair of the Scientific Committee for the Bioiatriki Group. He has served as President of the Hellenic College of Nephrology and Hypertension (2012–2014) and maintains an extensive publication history tracking the renin-angiotensin system, erythropoiesis, and renal protective strategies.
