Wilhelmus Kwanten

Wilhelmus (better known as Wilco) Kwanten is a research physician affiliated to the Antwerp University Hospital and University of Antwerp in Belgium. He was trained at the same university in Antwerp (BE) and did postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston (USA). Dr Kwanten is active in the field of hepatology. His main interest, both in clinic as in research, is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Amongst others, intra- and extrahepatic vascular alterations are associated with NAFLD and also believed to be an important driver of disease progression. His research focusses on the intrahepatic (micro)vascular dysfunction that can already be observed early in the disease course of NAFLD. In mouse models disease course can be modified by targeting the vascular dysfunction.
