Stefania Stefani

Stefania Stefani is full professor of Microbiology and head of the laboratory of Medical Molecular Microbiology and Antibiotic Resistance (MMAR) at the Department of Biomedical and Biotechnological Sciences and University Hospital at the University of Catania, Italy, where, from 2016 she is also President of the Italian Society of Microbiology (SIM) and of the Research Innovation Technology Lab (BRIT). Within the MMAR, an active institution for the surveillance of resistant pathogens and testing of antimicrobial activity of new molecules, her scientific activity is mainly related to several aspect of antibiotic resistance both in Gram-positive and Gram-negative microbes: from molecular mechanisms and epidemiology to genome studies and characterization of mobile elements carrying resistance genes. From 2017 she is also Consultant for advanced bacteriology at the Policlinico University Hospital (Catania, Italy). Stefania Stefani has held several positions at the Italian Minister of Health: Member of the Board for the Antimicrobial Resistance Plan (2016-2017), Member of the National Board of evaluation of Italian professorship (ASN) (2013-2014), Member of the Board PNCAR 2017) and from 2018 is Member of the Board of Microbiome and Probiotics. She is also involved in the Scientific Board of the Società Italiana di Microbiologia (SIM); the Società Italiana Microbiologia Generale Biotecnologie Microbiche (SIMGBM); the Italian Society of Clinical Microbiology (AMCLI) and the Società Italiana di Chemioterapia (SIC). At the international level, Stefania Stefani was member of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious diseases (ESCMID), and part the scientific board of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and the International Society of Chemotherapy (ISC). In particular, she as participated as a member to the board of DSA-ESCMID for S.aureus bacteremia BSA guidelines (2017) and to the sub Committee for antimicrobial resistance EUCAST (ESCMID). Her editorial experience saw her involved both as a reviewer and as an editor for many peer-reviewed international journals (e.g. Editor in Chief of the Journal of Global Antimicrobial Resistance JGAR since 2012 and Editor of the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents; editor and reviewer for Libyan Journal of Medicine, Microbiology, Journal Chemotherapy, Annals of Microbiology, Medical Science Monitor, J. Infectious Diseases, J. Hospital Infections, Journal Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, Microbiology, Frontiers in Microbiology).
