Dr. Maru’s program of research focuses on adolescents and young adults with chronic conditions, specifically cancer. Her work on chronic disease survivorship is exemplary. She initiated a peer support program for adolescents/young adults with cancer with a pediatric medical oncologist. This work, including fertility issues, health care transitions, maternal employment, social support, etc., is cutting edge. Cancer survivorship and health care transition research is essential in order to promote healthy outcomes for this vulnerable population. Dr. Maru’s work in this area has led to her collaborations with Japanese physician colleagues (multiple publications), serving as a nurse advisor on the development of Japanese clinical guidelines, as well as work with international colleagues. Dr. Maru is a founding member of the Japan Alliance of Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology. She has served in leadership roles on multiple professional societies, as well as service to non-profit and community organizations serving these vulnerable populations.
