Michael Rendl

Dr. Michael Rendl is a stem cell researcher internationally recognized for his work on the functions of the dermal papilla and dermal sheath – the specialized mesenchymal components of the hair follicle stem cell niche. He received his MD from the Medical University of Vienna in Austria. Michael completed his postdoctoral training as Max Kade and Erwin Schrödinger Fellow in the laboratory of Elaine Fuchs at The Rockefeller University, where he first began studying the specialized role the hair follicle mesenchyme plays as a stem cell niche. Since 2008, Dr. Rendl has run his research laboratory at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, where he is Professor in Cell, Developmental & Regenerative Biology, and Dermatology, as well as the Associate Director of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine and the Black Family Stem Cell Institute. His laboratory pioneered cellular and molecular studies of the dermal papilla, the dermal sheath and their embryonic precursors during hair follicle development. Novel mechanistic and functional insights continue to build a platform for developing future hair regenerative therapies.
