Lior Lowenstein

Lior Lowenstein is a world-renowned ophthalmologist and academic leader, currently serving as the Director of the Division of Ophthalmology at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center. She holds the Sydney A. Fox Chair in Ophthalmology and is a Full Professor of Ophthalmology at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, where she also serves as the Vice Dean.

Professor Loewenstein is a leading expert in retinal diseases, with a specialized focus on age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinal vascular diseases, and the development of innovative technologies for early detection and home monitoring of retinal conditions. Her clinical and research contributions have been instrumental in advancing the treatment of macular pathologies, particularly through her work on automated retinal imaging and pharmacotherapy.

A prominent figure in international ophthalmology, she has held numerous prestigious leadership roles, including:

• General Secretary of the European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE).
• President of the Israel Ophthalmological Society.
• International Representative on the Board of Trustees for the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).
• Board Member of the EURETINA society and the Macula Society.

Professor Loewenstein is a prolific academic contributor, having authored over 450 peer-reviewed articles and numerous book chapters. She serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Case Reports in Ophthalmology and is on the editorial boards of major journals such as Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science (IOVS), and Retina. In recognition of her scientific excellence, she has received several honors, including the Michelson Award from the Macula Society and the Rosenthal Award.
