José Garnacho-Montero is the Head of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Hospital Virgen Macarena, a large urban hospital with affiliation to the University of Seville. This is a medico-surgical ICU with 30 beds. He is former Director of the Hospital Quality Unit of the Hospital Virgen del Rocío (Seville). He actively works with critically ill patients with sepsis and severe infections. His principal research area is diagnosis and treatment of nosocomial infections including infection control and antimicrobial stewardship. He has published over 180 original articles, and reviews in the field of sepsis and infections in critically ill patients. He coordinated a recent international Task Force about management of A. baumannii infections or De-escalation Therapy in ICU patients. He has also written several books and book chapters about infections in the critical care setting and about the diagnosis and management of severe infections. He is a frequent speaker and session chair at major international conferences. Dr Garnacho-Montero has participated in numerous research projects funded by external agencies and is involved in reviewing manuscripts in prestigious journals focused on infections in critical care. From January 2015, He is the Editor-In-Chief of Medicina Intensiva the official journal of the Spanish Society of Intensive Care (SEMICYUC). He was the Deputy of the Infection Section of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) from 2016 to 2018.
