Giuliana Tromba

Giuliana Tromba is the principal scientist of the SYRMEP X-ray imaging beamline of the Elettra synchrotron light source. She has more than 25 years of experience in the application of Synchrotron Radiation (SR) -based imaging techniques to different areas of biology, bio-medicine and medical radiodiagnosis. She has also experience in radiation dosimetry, in shielding calculations and safety systems and is in charge for Radiation Protection at Elettra and FERMI laboratories. Recently her main research outcomes regarded the development of morphological and functional imaging protocols for small animal models as well as the applications of multiscale phase contrast computed microtomography (CT) protocols for the study of insects, embryos, tissues, plants and biomaterials. She promoted the use of SR for medical radiology and in particular for clinical mammography. In a Collaboration between Elettra, Trieste University and Cattinara Public Hospital (Trieste), she proposed the first program of clinical mammography with SR that was successfully carried out in the years 2000-2013. Since 2020, she is the promoter of a novel imaging project aiming to implement a clinical trial of low dose phase contrast lung CT on patients at the Elettra Synchrotron Laboratory, in an active synergy with Gӧttingen, Heidelberg and Trieste University. She is author of about 250 publications on International Journals and Conference Proceedings. H-Index (scopus) = 39
