Graduated in Medicine & Surgery, he has been Full Professor of Nephrology, Director of the Department of Translational Medical Sciences and Head of the Clinical Department of Nephrology at the Vanvitelli University of Naples. Recently he has been appointed as Scientific Director of Biogem, a Research Institute involved in Molecular Biology, Genetics and Translational Medicine. He launched and coordinates the European CONNECT (Cognitive decline in Nephro-Neurology European Cooperative Target Action) project, financed through the COST Action program. His studies are at the interface between basic and clinical science. Embracing classic technologies such as in vivo micropuncture combined with the most emerging methods like omics approaches, have allowed him the opportunity to make numerous contributions for the understanding of various clinical conditions including tubulopathies, hypertension and various ions and acid-base balance disorders. He is Member of numerous scientific committees, grant peer-review panels including Dutch Kidney Foundation. He was component of the Editorial Board of Kidney Int. and Am. Journal of Physiol (Renal). He is Associate Editor of NDT and Journal of Nephrology, Chief Editor of Kidney and Blood Pressure Research. He has been President of the Italian Society of Nephrology, Council Member of European Renal Association (ERA). He has been Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the 2021 ERA meeting in Berlin. Last year he has received the Gabriele Monasterio Award for “Innovation in Nephrology” by the Italian Society of Nephrology. Recently he has been elected Chairman of the ERA Scientific Advisory Board.
