Gerard Hoek is an environmental epidemiologist, currently working at the Institute for Risk Assessment sciences at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. I had my training in Environmental Sciences in the Netherlands with environmental epidemiology as my speciality. My research interests include development of more refined exposure assessment methods for application in environmental epidemiology studies. I worked extensively on air pollution and on combined effects of air pollution, noise and green space. I enjoy environmental epidemiology because it provides critical information for addressing health concerns within society. Health impact assessment of built environment factors is another line of research I worked on intensively. Teaching environmental exposure assessment, environmental epidemiology and health impact assessment is another passion. I served in panels integrating the evidence on health effects of environmental stressors and providing policy advice, including the IARC assessment of carcinogenicity of outdoor air pollution. I contributed to a large Health Effects Institute systematic review of traffic-related air pollution and a Dutch Health council advice on ultrafine particles.
