Emmanouil Saloustros MD, D(Med)Sc was born in Athens, Greece, in 1975. He obtained his Medical Degree (MD) from the University of Thessaly in 2000 and completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in medical oncology at the University Hospital of Heraklion (2010). He conducted post-graduate research at the Section on Endocrinology & Genetics of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), focusing on heritable disorders that predispose to cancer, mouse models of human tumours and related issues. In 2013 he obtained his doctoral degree in cancer biology from the University of Crete School of Medicine. For six years (2012-2018) Dr Saloustros has served as consultant of medical oncology at the General hospital of Heraklion ‘Venizelio’ and established the hereditary cancer clinic at the University hospital of Heraklion. In June 2018 Dr Saloustros joined the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Thessaly, as assistant professor of Oncology. Dr Saloustros research is primarily focused on breast cancer risk assessment and management, the BRCA1/2 associated breast and ovarian cancers, and the other hereditary syndromes that predispose to cancer. In parallel he studies the genetics of non-BRCA1/2 associated breast cancer in collaboration with the breast cancer association consortium (BCAC). He is also interested in cancer in young individuals. He is member of the board of directors of the Hellenic Society of Medical oncology, chair of the ESMO/SIOPE cancer in AYA WG and member of international research groups (e.g. BIG and EORTC).
