From 1 November 2014 to present Chief of the Neurosurgery Department Azienda Ospedaliera Papa Giovanni XXIII – Piazza OMS 1 – 24100 Bergamo The S. C. Neurosurgery of Bergamo is the center of reference for the province of Bergamo (about 1 million 200 thousand inhabitants). There are eleven medical consultant and three registrars working there. The unit, which is part of the \"Neuroscience\" Department, consists of thirty inpatient beds. The NeuroIntensive Care Unit and the Post-Operative NeuroIntensive Care Unit include another sixteen beds. There are two operating rooms which are active every day from 8:00 to 19:00. One of the two rooms is also used for emergency / urgent neurosurgery. Every year about 1300 surgeries are performed. The technological equipment of the structure is as follows: a Zeiss Pentero microscope equipped with intraoperative videoangiography, a Zeiss NC4 microscope, a Brainlab neuronavigation system, two SONOPET ultrasonic aspirators, one CUSA ultrasonic aspirator, one MicroDoppler, an endoscopic column with Stortz and Aesculap neuroendoscopes, a stereotactic helmet, eight Anspatch drills. In March 2018 two new operating theatres equipped with an high-field MRI and a multislice CT scan, respectively, were opened. The Department works in close partnership with S.C. ENT for the treatment of tumor diseases of the cranial base, in particular for the execution of surgeries with nasal endoscopy. His experience comprise about 100 cases of Endoscopic Endonasal Skull base tumor removal. His surgical cases as the first operator (1995-2014) include more than 2300 operations; about 1000 operations for cranial diseases (supratentorial, infratentorial, and cranial base tumors, as well as vascular disease cases), and more than 1200 operations concerning the spinal column (more than 100 intradural tumors and over 300 operations for instrumented spinal surgery). He is able to entirely treat vascular disease both in urgent and elective cases (Aneurysms, AVMs, Dural arteriovenous fistulas, Cavernous Hemangiomas), using the aids of the intraoperative videoangiography and the MicroDoppler. In the field of spinal pathology he has extensive experience that has allowed him to perform regular operations for spinal fixation at all levels (occipital-cervical, C1-C2, dorsal and lumbosacral) both via posterior, anterior, and anterolateral approaches, using the instruments and surgical techniques most recently available, in particular the minimally invasive methods (es. MI-TLIF). During this time he has introduced into daily practice surgical stabilization via a percutaneus approach and the balloon kyphoplasty. In the field of degenerative pathology of the spine he is able to perform interventions of prosthesis both for the cervical and the lumbar spine. He routinely performs surgery for the removal of vertebral tumors, intradural and intramedullary with the aid of intraoperative monitoring (MEP, SSEP, D wave). The budget objectives set by the General Management were 99% achieved in 2015, 100% in 2016 and 2917, 95% in 2018.
